In 1806, in the middle of the alp below Śnieżnik a shepherd’s farmstead was built. It was named „Szwajcarka” (Polish for a female Swiss), since the tenant came from Switzerland. It was a large cattle and sheep dairy farm. The farmstead also housed a separate part for hikers and a small buffet. In the second half of the 19th century, in response to high interest of tourists and hikers in the area, Princess Marianne of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau, who owned these lands at that time, commissioned a construction of a new mountain refuge. Śnieżnik was continuously becoming increasingly more popular which resulted in addition of another facility having the function of an inn – it is the building that currently serves as the mountain hut. The setting out of forest roads significantly impacted accessibility of the peak, allowing for carriage and in winter sleigh trips to be organised. The facility was particularly popular during winter seasons since the adjacent areas offered fantastic snow conditions. Skiing courses organised here attracted celebrities from all over the world. Among some of the main attractions of those times it is necessary to mention downhill sleigh rides from the inn on the high alp down to Międzygórze.
The years following the end of WWII were not easy for the mountain refuge on Śnieżnik. Initially, abandoned it fell into disrepair, later it was taken over by the PTTK, but only minor repairs were made allowing the building to survive. The years of new glamour arrived with the person of Zbyszek Fastnacht–a tourism activist from Wroclaw. The facility underwent alterations, with its guestrooms, common areas, and sanitary installations thoroughly renovated. The object acquired a special climate, and the atmosphere reigning there is unforgettable.
Międzygórze can boast of one of the most modern stations of the GOPR Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue in Poland. The new building, with a design inspired by its mountainous surroundings, is well-inscribedwithin the landscape while its immediate vicinity has been adapted and equipped to the needs of rescue operations. The staff of the all-year-round GOPR station in Międzygórze have also been provided with professional equipment: quads, snowmobiles, a Land Rover Defender, and – obviously - appropriate medical supplies in order to guarantee maximum safety to tourists. Inour mountains hikers may feel safe since they are in good care of professionally trained rescuers. The investment was partly subsidised by the EU in the frames of the Dolnoslaskie Regional Operational Programme.
We wish our visitors only safe and well-advised mountain treks, should anything unexpected happen, however, our GOPR Rescue and Search Service Station at ul. Śnieżna 23c may be contacted 24/7 all year round.
